Taking Pat Robertson to Task

Yesterday, Congressman Alan Grayson commented on the troubling remarks by Pat Robertson on Haiti’s “Pact with the Devil.” Ridiculous nonsense from Robertson, of course, but it’s good to hear Grayson revisit Robertson’s misguided remarks, his run for the presidency in 1988 and his impact on the formation of the Conservative Christian sector of the Republican party.

I find it extremely troubling to hear Robertson (and others’) uneducated foment against the people of Haiti as well as calls for regulating international aid to the country.

Listening to “On Point” this morning, Robertson’s hateful remarks were echoed by a conservative caller who hoped the donations to Haiti would be accompanied by strings: namely, more jobs for Americans in the stricken country. Thankfully, Tom Ashbrook replied that these jobs–engineers and the like–might just as well be served by Haitians themselves. It confounds me how people might be critical of aid to Haiti when more than 150,000 were killed. American exceptionalism has no bounds.

Grayson himself is a Democrat from Florida. A much needed, progressive viewpoint in the ordinarily conservative mess of the Sunshine State.
